I've been into historical costuming since about 2003, when I got a sewing machine for Christmas. I get giddy about women's clothing from the 16th century all the way through the 1960s, but have a particular soft spot for 18th century fashion.
I started American Duchess in 2009, to chronicle my sewing adventures, but also to hopefully become a resource for other costumers who have the same questions I did. I wanted to know how to make a good 18th century wig, or where to get 18th century shoes, what fabrics were appropriate, what patterns to use, and so on. I even wrote a mission statement:
"American Duchess is a costume blog designed to educate and entertain those interested in learning more about the fashions of the 18th century and other periods of dress. I believe in the free-flow of information, and strive to create tutorials and articles that are useful to historical costumers interested in this historical clothing."
In 2011, after becoming frustrated with being unable to find 18th century shoes, I decided to try my hand at manufacturing them, and presented the first style in a line of historical footwear, the "Georgiana" 18th century shoe in a dyeable silk, followed by the "Devonshire" 18th century shoe in a dyeable leather. Since then, together with Mr. Chris, we've expanded the line to include several styles of 18th century women's shoes, from the early 1700s to the 1790s, along with adventuring into the Victorian, Edwardian, and 20th century styles.
Today I'm still blogging, sewing like mad, and working on new styles for the Historical Footwear line. Blogging about costuming has changed my life! I'm able to work from home, spend time with my dogs and awesome boyfriend Mr. C, and focus on doing the things I love.
I'm here to answer questions or just have a chat, so please drop me a line if you want to talk. I'm a real person! If you see me at a fair or a reenactment event, please say "hi." You can contact or follow me these ways, and please feel free!:
